Nebulous Attraction is a type of attraction experienced by those who can't, or don't, distinguish between attraction types. This is meant for individuals who specifically don't distinguish between different types of nonsexual or nonphysical attraction.
Individuals who experience nebulous attraction may refer to nonsexual attraction as being a part of "the blob;" any attraction that is not sexual falls into this one nebulous category. In other words, one may consider all forms of nonsexual attraction to be different versions of the same thing, with no clear distinguishability between them. Types of attraction included in the blob may be, but are not limited to:
- romantic attraction
- platonic attraction
- queerplatonic attraction
- alterous attraction
- amical attraction
- mental attraction
Individuals who experience nebulous attraction can typically easily identify sexual attraction, though some may also find it hard to distinguish from similar attraction types, such as aesthetic or sensual. individuals who experience nebulous attraction typically sort their attraction and/or relationship types into two categories: sexual (or physical), and the blob (everything else).
Individuals who experience nebulous attraction may also identify as sensualarian, relationship anarchist, quoiromantic, platoniromantic, idemromantic, nebularomantic, or similar identities.
This label is intended for neurodivergent usage, but anyone can use it if it is applicable and helpful in describing their attraction.
The nebulous label can be combined with other specific orientation labels. For example, pannebulous, anebulous, or lesbiannebulous.
History
Nebulous attraction was coined by wiki user Wemrotung on April 24, 2021. Xe coined this term because other terms for attraction didn't quite hit the mark. Xe often referred to xyr nonsexual attraction as "the blob;" one nebulous mess composed of many overlapping feelings. Xe decided to call this type of attraction "nebulous attraction," inspired by the nebularomantic label, while also being accurate in its meaning: the word "nebulous" means "unclear, vague, or ill-defined."
Xe considered nonsexual attraction to all be variations of the same thing, with no meaningful differences between them. For example, romantic and platonic attraction and relationships are the same thing, and aren't defined by any clear rules.
Xe believed xe would understand the differences between attraction types if xe was neurotypical, so this term was made with neurodivergent individuals in mind. However, xe approves of neurotypical individuals using this term if it is helpful to them.
Flag
The flag was made at the same time as the label, as well as by the same person. The colors were picked from an image of a nebula. The circle in the middle represents the stars in the nebula, but more importantly refers to the blob: the category for all nonsexual attraction.
