The flag was created by FANDOM user Ariathatsme on April 13, 2021. The meaning goes as follows: Red for romantic/sexual relationships, purple for tertiary, queerplatonic, and alterous relationships, and yellow for platonic and all other types of relationships. The pi symbol represents polyamory.

History

The term was coined by fandom user Cryptocrew, on November 24th, 2020 to fit the definition of a term an anonymous user described, that was not yet coined.
