Swan refers to a non-binary or abinary person who queers and subverts femininity in a distinct non-binary or abinary way while rejecting cisnormative ideas of what it means to be feminine and rejecting binary concepts of gender.
History
The term and it's flag was created by Tumblr user nonbinary-culture on July 20th, 2018. The flag stripe meanings are as follows:
- Light blue represents NB responses to and variations on cultural concepts of femininity, as interpreted and queered by nonbinary individuals; as well as rejection of the idea that these aesthetics are tied to binary gender. It also represents the firm assertion that any "feminine” aspects of swan presentation are self-asserted and self-affirming and not related to being “read” as “feminine”. Light blue represents rejection of the pressure to present to binary eyes.
- Gold represents NB identity itself.
- Cream represents NB beauty, softness, and grace, independent of any notions of femininity.[1]
