Opueste describes someone who fits the description of heterosexual in that one is exclusively attracted to the opposite gender or a generally different gender than ones own. However, due to trauma, one is triggered by, made uncomfortable by, or otherwise mentally unable to identify with the term straight/heterosexual without it having a negative impact on oneself.

For example, someone who previously identified as cisgender and queer, who now identifies as transgender and fits the description of heterosexual but isn't comfortable using the term due to traumatic experiences regarding homophobia, being closeted, or otherwise, may identify as opueste. There are, however, many different valid ways of identifying as opueste and users of the term do not need to explain their trauma in order to be validly opueste.

This identity is exclusive to those who have experienced trauma. The term is not necessarily an LGBTQ+ identity, it is simply to be used by those who cannot identify as heterosexual.

    History

The term was coined by FANDOM user TheNelsonSystem, specifically Laken from their system, on July 29th, 2021.

Its name comes from the spanish word for 'opposite', 'opuesta/opuesto', with an 'e' having been substituted for the 'a' and 'o' to make the term neutral.
