Obscurian is an umbrella term for genders that are unable to be named, quantified, understood, explained, and/or determined. Obscurian is not to be confused with questioning, as a questioning person may end up having an understandable and explainable gender, and obscurian may be used as a permanent label. It is under the kenochoric umbrella.

While obscurian is meant to be an umbrella term, it can also be used as a gender on its own. Subsets of this term include obscurique[1].

    History

Obscurian was coined by Tumblr user Kenochoric on November 23, 2020.[2] The flags and symbol were included in the same post. The flag stripes have no known meaning. The original obscurian flag is the simplified version, but a new version, along with the eye symbol, were made later on, with the original becoming a secondary option.[3]

The coiner has stated that there isn't much difference between obscurian and uingender, besides personally preferring the term. He also stated that obscurian is directly under the kenochoric umbrella, but that uingender may be too for some people.[4]
