Gender identity is an umbrella term that alludes to the combination of the gender, the physical comfort, and the intrapersonal comfort. All three terms refer to how someone relates to the categories within one's society. Society often classifies gender identity with labels such as masculinity, femininity, or androgyny, and these values are determined by presentations, behaviours, and other traits that are culturally associated with a specific gender.
For most people, their gender matches their physical and intrapersonal comfort, but it’s important to know that the three concepts are independent and can be different for each person.
Gender Identity vs Gender
Even though gender identity and gender are frequently used interchangeably, the main difference is that gender identity is an umbrella term containing gender in it. Gender refers to how someone feels within the labels that society stablished, while gender identity has a broader meaning referring to the three terms named above.
