Asymbifluid is a term used to describe anyone who experiences their gender as fluid while never fully identifying as either of the traditional Western binary genders (male or female). The term is an amalgamation of the words "asymptote", "binary", and "fluid", meaning it is a fluid experience of gender that approaches the binary genders without ever fully aligning with them (such as an asymptote will approach but never join a given curve). That is because those who are asymbifluid will experience at least one gender that is binary-adjacent, such as demigirl, female-aligned, feminine of center, demiboy, male-aligned, or masculine of center.
Asymbifluid is a form of genderfluidity that falls under the non-binary label. A person who identifies as asymbifluid may experience any two or more non-binary genders at different times, as long as they consider at least one of those genders to be close to male or female (without fully aligning with them). For instance, an asymbifluid person may go from experiencing their gender as demiboy, to androgyne, to fiaspec, to agender.
This term is similar in definition to genderfloren and enbyfluit, with the notable difference being the requirement that one experiences a sense of close alignment with one or more binary gender(s) at some point.
History
This term was first used in a reddit post by user callmesapph on 26 June, 2021[1]. Later (18 August, 2021), callmesapph recreated the flag and shared it in another reddit post, along with a definition of asymbifluid and a description of the new flag's meaning[2].
Flag
The top stripe of the asymbifluid flag is a reddish-pink that represents being female-adjacent. The golden yellow stripe represents the experience of non-binary genders. The center white stripe signifies the sense of self that is untouched by gender and/or that pervades across gender experiences. The purple stripe represents androgyny, or the blending of femininity and masculinity. The bottom teal blue stripe is representative of being male-adjacent[3].
