An angled aroace is a person that is both ace-spec and aro-spec (though not necessarily strictly aromantic and asexual) who experiences sort form of attraction that they feel is significant enough to warrant a place alongside their aro-spec and ace-spec identities. This attraction can be a tertiary attraction, sexual attraction, or romantic attraction. The term was intended to be used by those who are not strictly aroace (suptiliaromantic and suptiliasexual).
For example, someone who is demisexual, demiromantic, panalterous, would be angled aroace, based on experiencing a form of non-romantic, non-sexual attraction that is significant enough to warrant a place alongside their aroace orientation. As another example, someone who aromantic, greyasexual, bisexual would also be considered angled aroace due to specifying their sexual attraction, while still being ace-spec.
History
The term angled aroace is similar to oriented aroace (which only indicates aroace with tertiary attraction), and it was created by Tumblr user Black-Aros on March 24, 2019 in response to claims that oriented aroace is only for strictly aromantic asexuals.[1][2]
Flag
The angled aroace flag was posted by Black-Aros on March 24, 2019, shortly after announcing the term.[3] The yellow stripes were chosen as an opposite of the blue of the oriented flag. The light brown gradient beneath them meant as a visually-appropriate parallel to the gray gradient of the aromantic and asexual flags.
The five-stripe redesign was created by an anonymous wiki user on October 1, 2020. It was designed to mimic the original flag, as to stay true to the symbolism and original meaning, while also making it easier on the eyes. It is also meant to be easier to distinguish between colors.
