The term was created by @aboredsappic on November 16th, 2021 on Twitter. The term comes from violet flowers as they have a lot of history in wlw spaces.[1]

The flag was created by @aboredsappic on Twitter at the same time the term was made. The purple stripes represents violets and m-spec attraction. And the pink stripes represent sapphic attraction and love of women.
