Travesti is a transfeminine identity in Latin America, also a transgender expression, similar to travestigênere and transvestic.[1] Travestis have also been described as a third gender, but not all people who identify with the term see themselves this way.[2][3]
History
Travesti was initially a derogatory term but has been reclaimed by Argentinian and Peruvian travesti activists. Travestis emerged as a distinct social group in the 1970s.[4]
