Stag is a non-binary or abinary person who queers and subverts masculinity in a distinctly non-binary or abinary way while rejecting cisnormative ideas of what masculinity means and rejecting binary concepts of gender.
History
The term and it's flag was created by Tumblr user nonbinary-culture on July 20th, 2018. The flag's stripe meanings are as follows:
- Red represents NB responses to and variations on cultural concepts of masculinity, as interpreted and queered by nonbinary individuals; as well as rejection of the idea that these aesthetics are tied to binary gender. It also represents the firm assertion that any “masculine” aspects of stag presentation are self-asserted and self-affirming and not related to being “read” as “masculine”. Red represents rejection of the pressure to present to binary eyes.
- Gold represents NB identity itself.
- Burgundy represents NB boldness, strength, and bravado, independent of any notions of masculinity. [1]
The alternate stag flag was created by Tumblr user prideisforeveryonebutcops on an unknown date.[2]
