    == History ==
    Salmacian was originally coined on July 14, 1996 on Androgyny RAQ: Angel’s Dictionary<ref>http://web.archive.org/web/19990225073157/http://www.chaparraltree.com/raq/angels.shtml</ref>, however, the original definition was "male-to-intersex [or] female-to-intersex transsexuals". The coiner is named Cameron Reed.<ref>https://archive.is/eu3mo</ref><ref>http://web.archive.org/web/20230609090526/https://wandering.shop/@LateOnsetGirl/109345045618194664</ref> The definition was altered due to the misuse of the term intersex.<ref name=":0">https://pride-color-schemes.tumblr.com/tagged/bigenital</ref> The name salmacian was derived from the name of the nymph Salamacis, whose body was merged with that of Hermaphroditus; the son of Hermes and Aphrodite, in the ancient Greek myth which also gave us the word “[[hermaphrodite]]”.

    Tumblr user plurgai and princetbleach coined an alternate name, Aphrodisian, because of some people's discomfort about using the name taken from Salmacis, since the nymph canonically assaulted Hermaphroditus. It comes from Aphroditus.

    The flag was designed on or before June 24, 2017 by an anonymous Tumblr user<ref name=":0" />. In the myth of Salamacis and Hermaphroditus the two were joined together in one body and lived in a fountain/spring from then on. The design of the flag is meant as an abstract picture of the spring. Top half is light blue for the sky, bottom half is greenish brown for the ground, and then a thick blueish-purple stripe in the middle for the spring.

    The bisex (with other names, such as bisexed, ambisexed, ambissex, bissex) flag was designed by imoga-pride on December 14, 2018. It has no confirmed meaning.<ref>https://imoga-pride.tumblr.com/post/181108333961/bissex-flag</ref>

    An alternate flag was created by ghast505 on November 3, 2020.<ref>https://ghast505.tumblr.com/post/633735789709295616/i-felt-the-salmacian-flag-really-needed-a</ref> It is based off the original colors as well as the altersex flag.
