Pomogender is an identity where one denies or does not fit any labels for any particular gender. For example, someone who is pomogender may know they are not cisgender but cannot, or is not interested in, specifying their gender or genders. Pomogender may also be used by those who may fit into one gender category but dislike the idea of having to have a specific label, making pomogender an unlabel.
Culture
The term “pomogender” first appeared in 2013 on an Asexual Visibility and Education Network (AVEN) forum.[1] The term was likened to pomosexual but for gender.
Pomo is an abbreviation of “postmodern.” Having a postmodern understanding of gender is typically academic. Since the 1990s, postmodern gender theorists have defined gender as a speech act, something spoken into existence that is dependent on the words used and refine by how words are used.[2] Pomogender people may not be able to conceptualize gender or have a concept of gender that is not available or meaningful in current gendered language.
Unlike genderpunk and gender nihilism, pomogender does not inherently refer to resisting the modern construction of gender or wanting to get rid of gender but instead feeling beyond or past gender for the sake of being human.[3]
