The first proposed symbol for maverique was the astrological symbol for the sun (☉), but that had been criticized since the sun is associated with binary genders in many cultures. The comet symbol (☄) was also suggested as a maverique symbol, and is still occasionally used, though it is also used as a general [[Non-Binary|non-binary]] symbol.
The maverique symbol was designed by Tumblr user Sneer in February 2017.<ref>https://maveriques.tumblr.com/post/157742422210/my-new-version-of-the-maverique-gender-symbol</ref> The outer circle represents the gender binary and the inner, filled in circle represents maveriques not being any part of it. The sun symbol is also somewhat incorporated into the symbol.
== Etymology ==
The word "maverique" is a combination of the word "maverick" meaning "individualist/unorthodox person", and the French suffix "-ique
The etymology<ref>https://www.etymonline.com/word/maverick</ref> of the word "maverick" coincides with the gender identity — the term "maverick" originally meant ''"a calf or yearling found without an owner's brand,"'' and originated from a Texas cattle owner named Samuel A. ''Maverick'' who became infamous for neglecting to brand his cattle. Similarly, people of the "maverique" gender identity have a notable '''unbranded''' identity in relation to the gender binary or surrounding politics - in contrast to androgyny, neutrality, non-applicability, apathy, or revolt.
