The LGB Alliance is a British anti-trans advocacy group. The LGB Alliance describes its objective as "asserting the right of lesbians, bisexuals and gay men to define themselves as same-sex attracted", and believes that the rights of LGB individuals are threatened by transgender individuals[1]. It is widely considered to be a hate group by most LGBT organizations.[2][3]

    History

In September of 2019, twenty-two people in a letter accused the Stonewall charity of "undermined women's sex-based rights and protections" through it's support of transgender individuals.[4] Twelve months earlier, Stonewall had declined to have a "respectful debate" on it's transgender policies.[5] One month after the letter was made public, the LGB Alliance was launched, stating that it was committed to "freedom of speech" and "fact instead of fantasy".

    Charity Status

In March of 2020, the LGB Alliance submitted an application to the Charity Commission for England and Wales, stating that they were "applying for charitable status and building an organization to challenge the dominance of those who promote the damaging theory of gender identity"[6] A petition against the application received 30,000 signatures[7], and the commission found that LGB Alliance made "inflammatory and offensive" social media posts, as well that their message "appeared to involve, at times, demeaning or denigrating" remarks about the rights of transgender individuals. When the LGB Alliance agreed to fix it's social media policies, it was granted charity status.[8]

    Rule Violations

In August of 2021, the Charity Commission announced that it would engage with LGB Alliance trustees after the organization broke Twitter's hate speech rules by announcing that "adding the + to LGB gives the green light to paraphilias like bestiality – and more – to all be part of one big happy 'rainbow family'."[9]

On September 7th, 2022, the LGB Alliance was found by the Fundraising Regulator to have broken it's Code of Fundraising Practice twice, by both making a "false and misleading" claim that it was the only charity representing lesbian, gay, and bisexual interests, as well as failing to deal correctly with a complaint made about this claim.[10]

    Gender Identity

The LGB Alliance has stated it "promotes and defends the rights of LGB people" adding that these rights "are rooted in simple, clear definitions of biology, i.e. that there are only two sexes, male and female, not some multitude of genders on a gender spectrum." The organization believes the "conflict between trans rights and the rights of LGB people – and women's rights" stems from the "extraordinary widening of the definition of trans". This, they argue, used to mean "a transsexual who has gone through some actual physical process to become more like their 'chosen' sex" but now includes "almost any man" who "declare[s] he is a woman" and "cross-dressers".[11]

Co-founder Bev Jackson has also stated that "At school, in university, [focus on lesbians] is so uncommon, it is the bottom of the heap. Becoming trans is now considered the brave option." She also stated that "If you do not accept that everyone has a gender identity then you are automatically labelled transphobic which means you can no longer discuss women's lives and what's happening to lesbians. We are increasingly discovering that lesbians are no longer welcome in the LGBTQ+ world, which is astonishing."[12]

    Conversion Therapy

The LGB Alliance has voiced it's support for transgender conversion therapy in it's attempt to exclude transgender individuals from legislation banning conversion therapy.[13] Furthermore, The LGB Alliance claims that affirmations for transgender youth is gay conversion therapy and that campaigns to ban conversion therapy for transgender people are "being used as political cover to promote an affirmation-only approach to gender identity".[14]

    Treatment of Dysphoric Children

Bev Jackson accused the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, which offers Gender Identity Development Services (GIDS) to dysphoric children, of "transing out the gay".[12] She also claimed that transgender children were more likely to be autistic.

In November of 2020, Jackson was quoted in a BBC story about children experiencing delays in access to gender affirming care, saying "We don't think children should be allowed to self-diagnose any medical condition."[15] She also welcomed the verdict in Bell v. Tavistock, which banned puberty blockers without court approval.[12] The verdict would later be overturned.[16]
