Fetrah is the name of an Arab anti-LGBTQ movement. The name comes from the Arabic word for "human instinct". The movement's main goal is to promote the idea that there are only two binary genders and that heterosexuality is the only moral sexuality. It is considered a hate group by most LGBTQ organizations in West Asia and North Africa.
It is important to note that, while many members of the Fetrah movement use their status as Muslims to excuse their actions, this is not a representation of all Muslims. Many Muslims support or are a part of the LGBTQ community, and the actions of one group should not be viewed as the standard.
History
In 2022, the movement was founded by three Egyptian marketing professionals following controversies in Saudi Arabia where all rainbow-colored toys and clothes for children were recalled for "promoting homosexuality". The movement gained thousands of followers in a matter of weeks, particularly on Twitter, Pinterest, and Picsart.[1]
The organization who launched the campaign issued a communique on July 6, 2022, arguing that the goal of the initiative is to express “categorical rejection” against all campaigns and “malicious ideas that are promoted and that are contrary to human instinct.”
The movement particularly took off in Morocco, as Hassan Kettani, one of Morocco’s most renowned Islamic scholars, supports the campaign. In a statement to Morocco World News, Kettani rejected homosexuality, emphasizing his position:
“Parents have to be careful and protect their children against communication tools, which could contribute to having their daughters and sons influenced by campaigns supporting and promoting the LGBT community."[2]
Flags
Younger members of the Fetrah community, particularly those on sites like Pinterest and Picsart, have taken to creating flags for different aspects of the Fetrah community. Surprisingly, some of these flags are for a-specs. This is believed to be because asexuality isn't same-sex attraction, it isn't considered immoral to some Fetrah members. Many of these flags are also copied from LGBTQ pride flags.
