Camiona is a pejorative word used primarily against masculine women, particularly transmasculine people, butch lesbians, tomboys and other gender non-conforming sapphics in Chile.[1]
Similar terms and variations include: camionera, camión (Ecuador and Venezuela), camionero (Guatemala), juana tres cocos (Spain), marimacho and d*ke.
Origins
The word translates directly from Spanish as "truck,"[2] but with the letter A at the end, indicating that the word applies to women.[3] It comes from the general lesbophobic tradition of comparing masculine women with men and heavy vehicles, following the example of "traktorlesbe" in Norwegian[4] and "troquera" in Spanglish.[5]
Reclamation
Sapphic women can be seen reclaiming the word as their own; however, it is still not advisable to use it without permission, as it may be uncomfortable for specific women in the community.
