This is most commonly understood to mean men and women, although bisexual activists have been outspoken about the sexuality not being limited to the gender binary. Bisexual people can be attracted to any genders. Bisexual people may or may not have a preference and may or may not feel a difference between genders.

    Bisexuality also can be similar to [[Pansexual|pansexuality]] and other [[Multisexual|multi-gender-attracted identities]]. The difference between these identities usually comes down to individual preference, particularly where people may feel that different terms communicate their personal experience of attraction with more accuracy.
    '''Bisexual '''(often shortened to '''Bi''') refers to someone who is attracted to two or more genders, also worded as attraction to the same gender and different genders. '''"Bisexuality is a whole, fluid identity. Do no assume bisexuality is binary or duogamous in nature: that we have 'two' sides..." - the Bisexual Manifesto''', published in 1990. This is excerpt from the Bisexual Manifesto - arguably the most important piece of bi history - refers to the fluidity that the term "bisexual" holds. It can mean attraction to only two genders without preference, or attraction to all genders with preferences.

    == Misconceptions about Bisexuality ==
    '''1 )''' It is a common misconception that, in order for one to be bisexual, one must have a preference between one gender and another. This is biphobic to assume, as there are many bisexuals who have no preference between genders.

    '''2 )''' Another common misconception is that bisexuality does not include transgender or nonbinary individuals. This is not only biphobic, but also transphobic and enbyphobic, and extremely untrue. Bisexuality has always included nonbinary and transgender individuals. ( Remember: "Do not assume bisexuality is binary." )

    '''3 )''' "Bi means two" correct, but not in the way one would think. Yes, the prefix of bisexual does mean two, but the 'bi' in bisexual refers to the attraction or the two sexes, not the two binary genders (female & male).

    '''4 )''' "Bisexuals are more likely to cheat due to their multisexual attraction" This has been a stereotype that has plagued bisexuals since the term was coined, and it's wrong. Bisexuals aren't more likely to cheat, and if one believes such, they are biphobic.

    '''And, unfortunately, there are many more.''' Due to the fluid nature of bisexuality, many tend to get it wrong, re-define it, or misconceive it.

    == The Bisexual Manifesto ==
    (Originally Published in 1990, in the magazine Anything That Moves.)

    We are tired of being analyzed, defined and represented by people other than ourselves, or worse yet, not considered at all. We are frustrated by the imposed isolation and invisibility that comes from being told or expected to choose either a homosexual or heterosexual identity.

    Monosexuality is a heterosexist dictate used to oppress homosexuals and to negate the validity of bisexuality.

    Bisexuality is a whole, fluid identity. Do not assume that bisexuality is binary or duogamous in nature: that we have ''"two"''sides or that we must be involved simultaneously with both genders to be fulfilled human beings. In fact, don’t assume that there are only two genders. Do not mistake our fluidity for confusion, irresponsibility, or an inability to commit. Do not equate promiscuity, infidelity, or unsafe sexual behavior with bisexuality. Those are human traits that cross all sexual orientations. Nothing should be assumed about anyone’s sexuality, including one's own.

    We are angered by those who refuse to accept our existence; our issues; our contributions; our alliances; our voice. It is time for the bisexual voice to be heard.

    The bisexual pride flag was designed by a team led by LGBT activist Michael Page in 1998. The flag was created in order to give the bisexual community its own symbol which was easily recognized and comparable to the gay pride flag(rainbow flag) that represented the larger LGBT community. Page's aim was to increase the visibility of bisexuals, both among society as a whole, and within the LGBT community.
