Anybody of any group can identify with amatopunk. It’s a broad, inclusive label for different types of people, and how amatonormantivity affects them and/or their community.
However, amatopunk does not promote or equal the normalization or inclusion of dangerous relationship types, such as pedophilic, nonconsentual, zoophilic, incestuous, or abusive relationships. Amatopunk specifically promotes healthy relationships that respect "comfort, boundaries, communication, and consent."<ref name=":0" />

Amatopunk, and its flag, was created by Tumblr user kenochoric on February 21st, 2021.<ref name=":0">[https://kenochoric.tumblr.com/post/643768147002966016/amatopunk-challenging-notions-of-what-it-means-to The amatopunk coining post.]</ref> The stripes on the amatopunk have no specific meanings due to how many groups are included, however the coiner has stated that it was taken from multiple other flags.
After its coining, a blog, called amatopunk, was created for this subculture.<ref>[https://amatopunk.tumblr.com/ The amatopunk blog.]</ref> On July 28th, a Carrd was created to further explain the amatopunk subculture/identity.<ref>[https://amatopunk.carrd.co/ The amatopunk Carrd, by the coiner.]</ref>
