The term affiliative genders was coined by Chaoticcylinder (gendertherapist) on August 25, 2020<ref>{{Archive|URL=20220127041541/https://gendertherapist.tumblr.com/post/627434461881040897/concept-for-organizing-genders|Site=web}}</ref>. It was originally named affinitive genders, as a direct parallel to affinitive orientations. It was later renamed to affiliative genders, as the term affinitive genders was already coined, meaning something different. Affiliative genders comes from the word affiliation.
